This Day in 1989: April 5, Wang Dan Publishes a New Magazine, Li Shuxian Speaks at Democracy Salon

April 5, 1989, is an anniversary date for the famous April Fifth movement. On this day, Wang Dan and a few of his classmates published a magazine: The New May Fourth. The first issue contains articles with daring opinions.

It is also a day for Democracy Salon. Despite the interference from the school authority, about 260 students showed up on the lawn. The guest on this day is Professor Li Shuxian, the wife of Fang Lizhi, who came at the Salon to show her support to the students. Li Shuxian and Wang Dan both gave speeches encouraging students in their pursue of democracy.
