This Day in 1989: May 31, Pro-Government Demonstration

The erection of the Goddess of Democracy at Tiananmen Square attracted more crowd there. But the students' occupation was still a chaotic scene. More and more people, especially the famous intellectuals involved in the Capital Joint Conference were leaving town.

On May 31, 1989, counter-demonstrations, apparently motivated by the government, appeared in the suburbs of the city. Hundreds of farmers, workers, and other residents marched with pro-government banners and slogans. Some even burned effigies of Professor Fang Lizhi's likeness.
