This Day in 1989: April 12, Wu Zuguang Speaks at Democracy Salon

On April 12, 1989, students in Peking University had their weekly Democracy Salon again, this time with the featured speaker Wu Zuguang, a prominent liberal intellectual. A couple of hundreds students showed up.

Wu Zuguang had already attended Democracy Salon sessions in 1988, hosted by Liu Gang.

This Day in 1989: February 4, Prominent Intellectuals Party for New Year

In the afternoon of February 4, 1989, dozens of prominent intellectuals and entrepreneurs attended a "New Year Party of Famous People in the Capital" (首都名人名家新春联谊会). Among the attendees who gave speeches are Fang Lizhi, Tang Yijie, Xu Lianying, and Chen Jun.

Fang Lizhi stated in his speech that Chinese intellectuals should form its own interest group to exert pressure on the government. He also emphasized that his focus is on human rights.

This Day in 1989: April 5, Wang Dan Publishes a New Magazine, Li Shuxian Speaks at Democracy Salon

April 5, 1989, is an anniversary date for the famous April Fifth movement. On this day, Wang Dan and a few of his classmates published a magazine: The New May Fourth. The first issue contains articles with daring opinions.

It is also a day for Democracy Salon. Despite the interference from the school authority, about 260 students showed up on the lawn. The guest on this day is Professor Li Shuxian, the wife of Fang Lizhi, who came at the Salon to show her support to the students. Li Shuxian and Wang Dan both gave speeches encouraging students in their pursue of democracy.

On April 3, 1989, Wang Dan published an open letter, co-signed by 57 students at Peking University, protesting the school's interference to their Democracy Salon activities. The open letter was delivered to the school office and posted at The Triangle on campus.
